Bathrooms have stricter electrical code requirements than almost any other room in the home because of the combination of water, wet skin, and electricity. In Arkansas, every bathroom outlet must be GFCI protected, no outlets may be inside a shower or tub area, ventilation fans must be on a dedicated circuit or meet specific code requirements, and lighting over tubs and showers must be rated for wet or damp locations. Whether you are remodeling or building new, here is what applies in NWA.

Why Bathrooms Have Stricter Electrical Rules Than Other Rooms

Water dramatically reduces electrical resistance in the human body, which means the same current that would cause discomfort in a dry environment can be lethal in a wet one. GFCI protection, outlet placement restrictions, and equipment ratings in bathrooms exist because of this physics, not bureaucratic caution.

In Northwest Arkansas, bathroom electrical code violations are one of the most common findings during home inspections. Many older homes in Springdale, Fayetteville, Rogers, and Bentonville have bathrooms that predate current requirements and are missing GFCI protection, have outlets in prohibited locations, or have lighting fixtures above tubs that are not rated for wet environments.

GFCI Protection: Required for Every Bathroom Outlet

The NEC requires GFCI protection for all receptacles in bathroom areas. This has been required since 1975 and applies to any outlet within the bathroom, regardless of distance from the sink or tub.

GFCI protection can be provided at the outlet itself or at the breaker. A GFCI breaker protects all outlets on that circuit. A GFCI outlet at the first outlet in a circuit can protect downstream outlets as well, but must be wired correctly to do so.

Where Are Outlets Allowed in a Bathroom?

Bathroom outlets must be adjacent to and accessible from the sink area. The NEC requires at least one outlet within 3 feet of the outside edge of each sink, measured along the wall. This placement ensures a hair dryer or electric razor can be used at the sink without a cord running across the room.

Outlets are prohibited within the tub or shower space, defined as the area within 3 feet horizontally and 8 feet vertically of the tub rim or shower threshold. No outlet of any kind is permitted in this zone.

Outlet height matters too. Outlets should not be installed in a location where they could be reached by a person in the tub or shower.

Does a Bathroom Need a Dedicated Circuit?

The NEC requires at least one 20-amp circuit dedicated to bathroom receptacles. This circuit must serve only bathroom outlets and cannot share capacity with lighting, exhaust fans, or outlets in other rooms.

In larger homes with multiple bathrooms, one 20-amp circuit may serve the outlets of multiple bathrooms, but it cannot also power anything outside the bathrooms.

Many older NWA homes run bathroom outlets on the same circuit as bedroom outlets or hallway lighting. This does not meet current code and is typically corrected during a bathroom remodel that pulls an electrical permit.

Exhaust Fan Requirements

Bathroom exhaust fans are required in bathrooms without operable windows under both the IRC and Arkansas residential code. Even in bathrooms with windows, exhaust fans are standard practice.

Exhaust fans can share the bathroom circuit in some configurations, but many electricians install them on their own switch and circuit for convenience and code compliance. If a bathroom exhaust fan includes a heating element, it must be on a dedicated 20-amp circuit.

Exhaust fans must be rated for the cubic footage of the bathroom. The formula is simple: calculate the bathroom’s volume in cubic feet and choose a fan rated to exchange that air at least eight times per hour. Your electrician and HVAC contractor can advise on the right unit.

Lighting Over Tubs and Showers

Lighting fixtures installed above tubs and showers must be rated for their specific location. The NEC defines three zones above the tub and shower:

  • Zone 1 (inside the tub or shower): Only fixtures rated for wet locations are permitted.
  • Zone 2 (within 3 feet of the tub or shower outside the spray area): Fixtures rated for damp locations are required.
  • Beyond Zone 2: Standard fixture ratings are acceptable.

Installing a standard indoor fixture inside a shower is a code violation and a safety hazard. Recessed fixtures above showers and tubs require wet-location rated trims and housings.
